While many conspiracy theories have little to no factual basis, the conspiracy theory that celebrities are being mind-controlled by MK-ultra techniques holds much greater weight, as MK-ultra was a real project conducted by the United States Central Intelligence Agency. However, while it’s connected to legitimate history, this theory crosses the line into sensationalism and negligence of science and realism. But first, what even is this conspiracy? It claims that the CIA is using modern-day methods developed from the MK-ultra project to brainwash and control celebrities’ minds to use them as puppets to influence the masses and carry out agendas. Some people even believe that mass shooters such as Adam Lanza and James Holmes were victims of MK-ultra mind control to serve as terrorist puppets and commit acts of domestic terrorism, which the FBI defines as violent criminal acts intended “to further ideological goals stemming from domestic influences, such as those of a political, religious, social, racial, or environmental nature” (“Terrorism”).
Although it’s unclear exactly when the conspiracy theory of mind-controlled celebrities began or where it originates from, the CIA’s MK-ultra project was first brought to widespread public attention in 1975 by the U.S. Congress in response to investigations conducted by the Church Committee and a presidential commission known as the Rockefeller Commission (Intellipedia). Flash forward to the rise of the internet and a celebrity-obsessed culture, and it’s easy to see how these factors, combined with conspiratorial thinking, gave rise to this theory. Regardless of how and when it started, however, to this day, platforms like YouTube, TikTok, Reddit, and other online spaces can be found to be sprinkled with accusations and assumptions of MK-ultra programming taking over Hollywood. Here’s one example.
The primary evidence that believers of this conspiracy theory use to support their claim are “glitches” that can be seen on certain video footage of celebrities. These “glitches,” as believers explain it, are moments when the victims’ brains start to fight against the programming and momentarily malfunction, resulting in strange behavior. One example of a “glitch” that conspiracy theory enthusiasts claim is proof for this theory is a time when Britney Spears underwent a quick succession of odd phrases and movements before breaking down in an interview. Another example is when Katy Perry collapsed when performing in Nashville, Tennessee. Some theorists even claim that demonic possession is involved with these “glitches.” Regardless of the exact story used to explain these incidents, the reality is that mind control is not to blame.
What Was MK-ultra?
While the conspiracy theory that celebrities are being controlled by MK-ultra techniques may seem outlandish and unbelievable, the real-world history of this operation is arguably just as, and possibly even more, unimaginable. To begin, MK-ultra, under the direction of agency chemist and poison expert Sidney Gottlieb, was initiated on the order of CIA director Allen Dulles on April 13th, 1953 (A&E Television Networks). This was largely in response to Soviet, Chinese, and North Korean threat of mind-control techniques being used on U.S. prisoners of war. Furthermore, the response occurred during a time when the Cold War was gaining traction and intense Communist paranoia began to overtake American politics, culture, and society. MK-ultra’s goal was to study and experiment with various strategies of interrogation, behavior modification, and other methods that could be used to influence and control the mind. A major focus included the use of drugs, most notably lysergic acid diethylamide, or LSD for short. Drugs that were less focused on but still experimented with included barbiturates, amphetamines, heroin, morphine, temazepam, mescaline, MDMA (ecstasy), psilocybin, scopolamine, marijuana, sodium pentothal, ergine, and alcohol. Other methods that MK-ultra experimented with were electroshock therapy, polygraphs, hypnosis, sensory deprivation, waterboarding, radiation, sleep deprivation, and verbal, sexual, and physical abuse, which went as far as dislocating limbs. (Fore 27-28) Subjects who underwent this experimentation included CIA employees, military personnel, doctors, and other government agents, as well as prostitutes, prisoners, mental patients, and some of the general public. While some of the subjects participated consensually, many were coerced or tested on without their consent or even knowledge. Most, if not all, of these experiments were extremely unethical and illegal. The project ultimately came to an end in 1973 in the middle of the Watergate scandal when the public began taking a closer look at the government, and in a panic to protect themselves, CIA Director Richard Helms ordered all MK-ultra files to be permanently destroyed. Although some documents survived, the destruction of most of these files makes it difficult, if not impossible, to gain a complete understanding of all that truly happened and was discovered throughout those two decades.
The Fallacies of Mind control
So, if celebrities behave inexplicably sometimes and MK-ultra was in fact real, why isn’t it plausible that celebrities are being mind-controlled? Well, the first and biggest reason as to why this isn’t feasible is that there is little to no factual evidence that mind control is actually possible, at least in the science fiction-like way that this conspiracy imagines. Besides the fact that MK-ultra was a real program that experimented with mind control techniques, the only “evidence” conspiracy theorists have to prove that celebrities are being mind-controlled are the occasional moments of weird behavior, or “glitches” in which they momentarily snap out of it. This logic suggests that celebrities are constantly mentally governed, with only temporary moments in which they snap back to being themselves. This simply isn’t realistic, as there is no evidence that suggests that technology, drugs, or other means can enable absolute direct command over an individual’s thoughts, behaviors, or actions and completely override free will. As perfectly explained by Medaglia et. al,
To truly understand the means to control the mind suggests that one has sufficiently observed it. This is no simple task. Brain stimulation strategies for mind control are limited by knowledge of the underlying brain network architecture, the nature of neural codes, and the limitations of technology and computing. …[S]tudies suggest that the brain is very difficult, if not impossible, to control. Thus, it is likely that one can only ‘guide’ the brain rather than ‘control’ it in its entirety. (4)
To put it simply, the brain is just far too complex for mind control to be possible.
But while the ability to control the mind is unrealistic, it can most certainly be influenced, persuaded, and manipulated. In fact, the American Psychological Association defines mind control as “an extreme form of social influence used to indoctrinate an individual in the attitudes and beliefs of a group, usually one that is religious or political in nature” (“Mind Control”). While it’s fun to explore the idea of mind control being similar to what we see in the movies, the reality of this term is confined to influence at most. The claim that this conspiracy makes—that celebrities are constantly, when in public, in an alternate state of mind to which they sometimes “glitch” out of—simply isn’t possible. Whether or not celebrities are being manipulated or mentally coerced, this certainly would not present itself as slip-ups of odd behavior in the way that this conspiracy theory emphasizes.
The Inhumanity of MK-ultra
Now I hear you saying: if most of the CIA’s files on MK-ultra were permanently destroyed, who’s to say they didn’t find a method that can actually control the mind? Well, the more likely answer as to why Richard Helms ordered the destruction of MK-ultra’s records is because of the extreme legal and ethical concerns that would have put their organization, reputations, and careers in jeopardy (Linville 2-3). For starters, many of the subjects in these experiments not only didn’t consent to partake in them, but were also completely unaware that they were in them in the first place. Not only is this by itself highly illegal and unethical but given the extremely potent nature of LSD with visual, auditory, and sensory hallucinations that are extremely realistic to the perceiver, subjects were put in a literal hell on Earth. As one subject describes his experience: “Total loss of appetite. Hallucinating. The room would change shape. Hours of paranoia and feeling violent. We experienced horrible periods of living nightmares and even blood coming out of the walls. Guys turning to skeletons in front of me. I saw a camera change into the head of a dog. I felt like I was going insane” (Nofil). This was the account of James “Whitey” Bulger, an inmate who voluntarily partook in these experiments under the impression that it would help find a cure for schizophrenia. Imagine the amplification of terror, confusion, and torment of those who underwent this experience unknowingly. On top of that, many experiments simultaneously involved abuse while people were under the influence. In fact, one unwitting victim by the name of Frank Olson died after drinking a cocktail that had secretly been spiked with LSD. While some accounts state that he stumbled, other reports said that he jumped out of a window of a New York City hotel room in an alleged suicide (A&E Television Networks).
Another major consequence of the MK-ultra program is the irrevocable damage done to the subjects’ lives by the inhumane experiments they endured. Some experiments involved a process called “depatterning,” where the goal was to break down the patients’ minds to a childlike state through drugs and electroshock therapy. This process left one particular patient by the name of Esther Schrier incontinent, mute, and with trouble swallowing and remembering basic life functions such as how to boil water. This “depatterning” process would be followed up by a reprogramming technique called “psychic driving,” where patients were forced to listen to taped messages played on a loop, often under a drug-induced coma. One case was reported to have lasted as long as 86 days (Noakes). The list goes on for the incredibly inhumane and unlawful experiments that were under the responsibly of the CIA with their MK-ultra operation. Other consequential symptoms of victims include, but aren’t limited to, an emergence of psychological disorders, emotional instability, moderate to severe amnesia, trauma, and suicidal ideation.
To add to the immorality, the CIA would specifically target vulnerable populations, or people “who could not fight back,” as one CIA official put it. This included mentally ill patients, racial minorities, military personnel, unaware citizens of the general public, and prisoners, who were considered especially good subjects, as they could be coerced with extra recreational time or alteration to their sentences (Nofil). Some cases even report children who were as young as three years old, some of whom were mentally ill, neurodivergent, and or orphaned. According to Albarelli & Kaye, notable LSD experiments conducted on children were done by child psychologist Lauretta Bender and took place in the Bellevue Hospital and Creedmoor State Hospital in New York City from 1942–1969. Members of the CIA set up brothels where they would utilize prostitutes to lure unsuspecting men, drug them, and attempt to extract information from them during or after sexual encounters. Interactions were observed from behind a two-way mirror or with bugged equipment hidden in the room. To use as leverage, they would reward these prostitutes with cash as well as interception when they would inevitably have run-ins with the law. These victims were put in a situation where they would be too humiliated to speak up about what happened to them. Vulnerable targets were less likely to speak out. Those who would speak out encountered credibility problems as they had difficulty remembering due to drugs and trauma.
Since hundreds of files documenting other happenings of MK-ultra were permanently destroyed, one can only imagine what other atrocities took place. Less likely is it that those files contained the answer to mind control than it is they contained a slew of more shockingly immoral and illegal practices that would incriminate the officials involved and forever destroy their careers and reputations. Additionally, another motive behind destroying the files was that if information got out about MK-ultra’s operation, it would expose the huge hypocrisy of the government, as President Richard Nixon had just launched his War on Drugs campaign in 1971. If information got out that the government was abusing drugs while claiming that drug abuse was “public enemy number one,” the government would lose an immense amount of credibility, trust, and cooperation from its citizens. So, while it’s tempting to theorize that the MK-ultra files were destroyed to protect the hidden knowledge of mind control, more likely governmental officials were trying to protect themselves.
The Consequences of Fame
While it’s possible that celebrities under mind control are placed in situations where they feel like they can’t speak up, we must remember that celebrities don’t match the criteria of vulnerability that MK-ultra exploited. Celebrities typically have many people and systems set in place to protect them. It is unlikely that most celebrities would find themselves in situations without the protection of their support systems, and it would be exceptionally unwise and perhaps even impossible to target individuals with such immense power, money, protection, and influence.
A more compelling reason than MK-ultra mind control that explains why celebrities sometimes seem to “glitch” in fits of odd behavior is the intense psychological pressures of fame. A study by Rockwell and Giles on the phenomenology of fame highlights the long list of stressors that stardom can bring. Some of these stressors include a loss of privacy, a constant feeling of exposure, mistrust in others, the constant need to wear a social mask, demanding/impossible expectations, intense public scrutiny, feelings of a loss in control of their own lives, self-consciousness, isolation, concerns about the impact their fame has on loved ones, questioning of self-identity, worry of stalking and obsession, and exhaustion from constant recognition (202-6). The extreme pressures of fame that encompass the lives of celebrities can be overwhelming. This can create an onslaught of mental health issues and drive many to turn to drugs and alcohol to cope, which can lead to addiction issues and add to the list of stressors. In addition, many celebrities are often overworked. One celebrity moment that people believe to be a “glitch” was when Katy Perry collapsed while performing “I Kissed a Girl” in Nashville, Tennessee. One YouTube user by the username of Grimzo8 (2017) commented on an video upload, “I know she did a lot but something about this video creeps me out. It’s like she had an mk ultra break down or something”; the comment amassed 2.4K likes and received many agreeing replies. Since the show, Perry has admitted that she fainted due to extreme exhaustion. This, as well as the other common factors that can be found in the stressful lives of celebrities, provide a much better explanation for their odd behavior than does MK-ultra mind control. When people are undergoing abnormal amounts of stress, it’s unfair to expect normal behavior from them at all times.
It should also be noted that individuals who earned their fame at a young often find its pressures even more debilitating. Not only did they have less control in obtaining fame, but they were less well prepared for it, which creates more susceptibility for mental health issues and substance abuse. Additionally, there is a systematic problem within the entertainment industry that abuses, takes advantage of, and overworks children. Many child celebrities feel as though that their childhood was stripped away from them, depriving them of ordinary experiences that create a healthy development into adulthood. Combining the already intense pressures of fame with the amplification of childhood stardom paves the way for even greater stress, isolation, and mental health problems. This can explain the case of Britney Spears, who gained her entrance to fame at age 11 by being on Disney’s Mickey Mouse Club show. An instance that conspiracy theorists claim to be a MK-ultra “glitch” occurs when Spears displays a series of odd behaviors and phrases before breaking down in an interview with Diane Sawyer on Primetime. However, it’s more likely that this behavior was a result from immense stress. This explanation is especially compelling considering that this incident occurred after the interviewer addressed a handful of major stressors going on in Spears’ life at the time, including illness in the family, an intense breakup, and a spasm of publicity. One study suggests that psychosocial stress may increase risk for psychosis and the development of other psychotic symptoms (van Winkel, et al). While there’s no one-size- fits-all explanation for the various displays of odd celebrity behavior, it is much more reasonable to assume that intense stress, exhaustion, impairments in cognitive function, psychotic symptoms, substance use, and mental health issues are the culprits of these occurrences. From a scientific standpoint, there is no factual evidence to support the possibility of mind control in the way that this conspiracy theory presents.
Broader Implications of Conspiracy Theories and Author’s Notes
Research has found that there are many social and psychological factors that explain why people believe and develop conspiracy theories. Some factors that have been linked to conspiratorial thinking are lower levels of analytic thinking, intelligence, and education. This lack of critical thinking skills leads people to be more likely to make uninformed or poorly informed decisions, rely more on personal opinions than facts, jump to conclusions, and accept information at face value without much, if any, examination of it. This can result in several cognitive biases that are also correlated with conspiracy theories. Some of these include the perception of patterns in randomness, the conjunction fallacy (or the tendency to overestimate the likelihood of co-occurring events), and biased assimilation (the tendency to accept information that confirms one’s desired conclusions and to reject information that contradicts them). Another bias is the Dunning-Kruger effect, which occurs when people overestimate their competence in the face of a lack of skills or knowledge in a particular area. This can be seen with flat Earthers when they believe they know more about the shape of the Earth than professional geologists. As perfectly summed up by Douglas et al. in “Understanding Conspiracy Theories,” these theories “appear to appeal to individuals who seek accuracy and/or meaning, but perhaps lack the cognitive tools or experience problems that prevent them from being able to find accuracy and meaning via other more rational means” (8).
Another factor that fuels conspiracy theories is the feeling of threat to control and security. Research suggests that belief in conspiracy theories is stronger under conditions of uncertainty (Douglas, et al.) Feelings of powerlessness, anxiety, mistrust, and lack of agency have all also been linked to conspiracy beliefs. This can be attributed to how conspiracy theories offer to explain uncertainties, soothe discomfort, and provide a sense of control by rejecting official narratives and allowing people to create their own account.
Though often fun and humorous, conspiracy theories can have hidden dangers. They can foster prejudice, influence health-related choices and political engagement, encourage denial of science, and provoke extremist and radicalized behavior. More so, they can have negative impacts on the lives of people who are topics of conspiracy theories, such as the case for celebrities in relation to the MK-ultra conspiracy: their struggles are undermined by the fictional idea of mind control. While this theory isn’t particularly harmful, others have the potential to add more mental strain on celebrities and even affect their reputation.
To help prevent the conjuring of conspiracy theories, I think it’s important to encourage critical thinking which can help provide people with the cognitive tools necessary to enable them to resist conspiracy theories. Schools should be required to teach media literacy as we continue to progress as a society that’s becoming increasingly more reliant on the Internet–a place where misinformation can be easily spread and eerily convincing, especially with the rapid development of generative artificial intelligence.
Lastly, I find it important to hold the government responsible for maintaining more transparency and honesty with its people. When powerful organizations withhold information from the public, it only fuels more suspicion, mistrust, and desire for understanding, which in turns fuels more conspiracy theories that seek to explain the unknown. Research has found that people exposed to antigovernment conspiracy theories lose trust in the government, and in turn are less likely to vote in the next election (Jolley & Douglas). If the government can step up to a greater level of integrity, foster a trustworthy relationship with its people, as well as provide more funding to the education system, it’s possible that our country could revitalize democracy and dispel the feelings of powerlessness, mistrust, and ignorance that generate conspiracy theories to begin with.
